I have a date!!!!!

My surgery date is set for October 27th (I can't believe it). The doctor has decided to do both jaws which means a longer surgery and tougher recovery.

I need your honesty here ... my biggest fear is not pain or swelling or bruising. I am terrified at the thought of waking up with mouth wired shut, throwing up when it has nowhere to go ... and then CHOKING.

Please tell me - have any of you had a throwing up incident? What do you do?!

I threw up a bunch after surgery and it was a piece of cake. There's really nothing to be afraid of (I'm not afraid this time around). I was wired too... not rubber bands, but metal wires. You won't have any solid food in your tummy, so there's no worry of choking on a chunk. I will just be blood that slipped down into your stomach during surgery if anything. It will come out the sides of your mouth and in between your teeth. (I didn't even hold my mouth open like you're instructed to do). I know it sounds terrifying, but for me it all felt very natural and wasn't bad (granted I was pretty doped up). Anyway, in your case, it's possible you might not have as good an experience with it as I did, but just remember there will be nurses by your side for the whole time you are in recovery and they will help you if there is any kind of emergency. =) I hope this story helps a little!

I threw up a few days after surgery. This may sound gross - but there is nothing in your stomach, so it is just liquid. It just kind of comes out. Don't worry about it - good luck!

I was very scared of it too; in fact I have a phobia about throwing up in general.Of course I did throw up blood on the first day post surgey. Luckily I felft it coming, pressed the nurse button and two of them were there in a flash. They had installed a suction pump next to my bed in case it happened and handled it very well. And then it was over, quite gruseome looking I'm sure, but it happened so fast and it was handled so well that I can't remember it as a horrible thing.
